A8 Interlaken-Ost – Brienz
The tunnels along this stretch have been equipped with emergency galleries in the period from 2014 to 2018. This project will be followed by a total renovation of the road surface and other engineering structures starting in 2021.
The stretch of the A8 between Interlaken-Ost and Brienz was opened to traffic in 1988, and since that time it has never undergone comprehensive renovation. In order to preserve the infrastructure on this major route for the future and adapt it to the latest standards, a total renovation is to be carried out starting in 2021. The plan is to renovate the entire infrastructure. At the same time, the suspended ceiling in the Giessbach tunnel is to be reinforced. The stretch that is to undergo total renovation begins at kilometre 24.0, i.e. just after the Bönigen junction in the direction of Interlaken. At the other end, work will commence at kilometre 37.8, i.e. in the vicinity of Brienz junction.
Before work on the total renovation commences, the Sengg, Chüebalm and Giessbach tunnels are to be equipped with emergency galleries. Preparatory work was initiated in autumn 2013, and the main tasks have been carried out between 2014 and 2018.
The emergency gallery in the Sengg tunnel was handed over for operation in February 2016. The Chüebalm safety tunnel has been completed in June 2016. And the Giessbach safety tunnel has been put into service in February 2018.
